Two ways to experience the thrill of The Gates!
NEW for 2011-12, skiers and riders can take a guided snowcat tour into Huckleberry Canyon to experience the cliff drops, cornice drops, rock chutes, open bowls, gladed runs, and powder pillows out The Gates. Or, free backcountry tours take qualified skiers and riders out The Gates every Friday at 10am, when conditions allow.
Starting at $79 per person, each snowcat tour will include a guide who will educate participants on backcountry safety and teach proper use avalanche equipment (shovel, probe, avalanche beacon, and backpack will be provided). Lunch is also included. The Sierra snowcat can hold up to ten people or can be rented out for private tours by groups of five or more.
The tours are appropriate for advanced skiers and snowboarders seeking a one of a kind backcountry experience and will run on select days throughout the season (weather and conditions permitting) from 10am until 2pm. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 530.659.7453 x284. A minimum of four participants is required for the Snowcat Tours to run.
These one hour tours introduce skiers and riders to the terrain in Huckleberry Canyon, offer advice on various lines, chutes and drops, and give directions on when and where to exit the Canyon. The tours are appropriate for advanced skiers and snowboarders and are limited to 7 people. Tours run on Fridays at 10am, weather and conditions permitting.
The tours are FREE! However, a valid lift ticket or season pass is required. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 530.659.7453 x284.
Free Backcountry Tours include all backcountry equipment (probe, shovel, avalanche beacon and backpack). Snowshoe rentals (for snowboarders, if needed) and fat skis are available through Ski Rentals. Split boards and Trekker set-ups are available through the Telemark & Backcountry Center.
*Weather and conditions permitting. Avalanches are an inherent risk of the sport due to the nature of snow and its application on steep, mountainous terrain. Avalanche Safety Tips »
