INCREDIBLE MID-WINTER CONDITIONS AT SIERRA-AT-TAHOE® RESORT

For Northern California Skiers and Snowboarders, It Doesn’t Get Much Better Than This

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE , Calif. – January 25, 2008 – Skiers and riders at Sierra™ Resort have spent the last week reveling in some of the best snow conditions Tahoe has seen in two winters. Following a storm that dropped more than nine feet of snow at the beginning of the year, snow has been falling steadily throughout the last week and is expected to continue through the end of the month with as much as another two feet accumulating.

Conditions are excellent all over the mountain – from the soft, velvety groomed runs in West Bowl to the legendary tree runs off Preacher’s Passion and in Jack’s Bowl to the backcountry terrain in Huckleberry Canyon with its endless powder runs.

Sierra Resort is located right on the western edge of the Sierra Nevada mountains, which not only makes it the closest resort to Sacramento and the bay area, but also positions it perfectly to receive generous snowfall from the storms that come in off the Pacific Ocean, dry out as they cross the Central Valley, and then slam into the 10,000 foot peaks surrounding Lake Tahoe. These storms deliver an annual average of 480 inches of snowfall. Sierra Resort’s north-facing slopes keep the snow in great condition days after a storm while wind-protected lifts enable skiers and riders to access that snow even on stormy days. Minimal snowmaking means that the surface conditions stay smooth and soft rather than becoming hard and chunky.

With so much of Mother Nature’s bounty to work with, Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort puts its heart and soul into grooming each night. Aiming to groom 70 percent of the open trails each night, including two high-angle, black diamond trails, Sierra Resort is a carver’s paradise. The grooming crew also lays down perfect corduroy on 100 percent of the beginner trails each night, creating a carpet of smooth, carvable snow that makes learning to ski or snowboard feel like cutting cold butter with a warm knife. Each morning, three Groomer’s Choice runs (one for each ability level) are selected and communicated both on the mountain and on the daily grooming map, so guests always know where to go to find those perfect lines.

For expert skiers and riders, 480 inches of snowfall each winter means there are acres and acres of perfectly spaced old-growth Red Fir trees to explore. With innumerable steep lines through Jack’s Bowl and mandatory rock drops in Avalanche Bowl, off-piste skiers and riders find Sierra Resort a powder paradise. In time for next winter, Sierra Resort is working with the U.S. Forest Service to incorporate Huckleberry Canyon inside the ski area boundary. Huckleberry Canyon is a buffet of cornice drops, rock chutes, gladed runs, and snow pillows just begging to be slashed. Lauded by Tahoe locals as some of the steepest and deepest terrain in the Tahoe area, Huckleberry Canyon is currently designated as backcountry terrain and accessible via five gates from the top of Grandview Express.

Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort is home to some of the nation’s most cutting edge terrain parks. A 24-7 Park Crew keeps the box and rail lines fresh and the take-offs and landings manicured. Our 17-foot Zaugg Superpipe is competition-grade, which is why freestyle guests might find themselves dropping in with Olympian Hannah Teter or X Games Gold Medalist Jaime Anderson. It’s no secret to locals why the best athletes in the industry choose Sierra Resort to prepare them for the next big competition.
