SIERRA-AT-TAHOE® AND NORTHSTAR-AT-TAHOE™ RESORTS HELP KEEP

HEALTHY NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

Outdoor recreational opportunities served with a side of healthy food options

TRUCKEE and SOUTH LAKE TAHOE , Calif. – December 29, 2007 – If you’re determined to keep this year’s New Year Resolution to live a healthier life, then head up to Sierra™ Resort, just outside of South Lake Tahoe , or Northstar™ Resort, just outside of Truckee, in Northern California . Both resorts are replete with opportunities to get you outside, enjoying the fresh mountain air, and both resorts offer a variety of ways to jump start your decision to make healthier decisions when eating out.

Snowshoe trails at both Sierra and Northstar Resorts are a perfect winter alternative to the treadmill. Snowshoeing burns an incredibly high number of calories, close to 700 per hour for a 150-pound person, and is relatively simple to do. No special skills or classes are needed – just strap on a pair of snowshoes and head out into the forest for a winter walk.

“Snowshoeing is an exceptional way to achieve cardiovascular fitness, thus reducing the chance for heart disease,” says Joe Piscatella, President of the Institute for Fitness and Health in Gig Harbor , Washington , and author of the best-selling book, Don’t Eat Your Heart Out. “It takes you into beautiful, serene settings that calm your mind while exercising your body. It’s a made-in-heaven deal for people who are looking for winter exercise.”

Cross-country skiing is considered to be one of the best activities you can do for your body. Not only does it get your whole body moving, but it is very low-impact. A 150-pound person can burn up to 1,188 calories by cross-country skiing for two hours at four miles per hour. Northstar Resort offers 40 kilometers of cross-country ski trails groomed for diagonal stride or skate skiing, along with a full fleet of rental equipment and a range of lesson opportunities. Another great alternative to a gym workout, cross-country skiing is an activity that people of all ages and fitness ability levels can enjoy.

Of course, alpine skiing and snowboarding are a fabulous way to spend time outdoors in wintertime and both can help get you in shape and tone your muscles. Even moderate downhill snowsports can burn as much as 400 calories per hour. When you take into account that, generally, you’ll spend the entire day on the slopes as opposed to an hour or two in the gym, a day at Sierra or Northstar Resort will be quite a workout!

After a day in the fresh air around Lake Tahoe , appetites will be hearty. Both resorts offer myriad opportunities for guests to replenish their bodies with healthier options. From the vegetarian rice bowl at the Happy Hippie and the Mahi Mahi fish tacos at the Baja Grill, all at Sierra Resort, to creative salads at Earthly Delights and Rubicon Pizza Company and the unique flavors and textures of traditional Japanese cuisine at Mikuni Sushi in the Village at Northstar™, there are plenty of tasty temptations that are light on the waistline.

Further resort efforts to assist guests in maintaining their conscience lifestyles, even while on vacation, include eliminating Trans fats from the kitchens and focusing on providing children with healthier food alternatives. Sierra Resort offers fruit and vegetable sides with every lunch in the Wild Mountain Children’s Center while Northstar Resort has put a healthy choice kids meal on the menu in the Day Lodge that features a hamburger, carrot sticks and milk.  Timbercreek Restaurant and Bread and Butter Convenience Store in the Village at Northstar both serve Coleman Natural meats and Petaluma poultry.
