EVERY STEP TOWARD SUSTAINABILITY MAKES A DIFFERENCE

A Longtime Culture of Personal Responsibility and Passion For The Environment

Sets Sierra-at-Tahoe® Resort Apart

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE , Calif. – Winter 07/08 – At Sierra™ Resort, just outside of South Lake Tahoe in Northern California , the recent media attention to all things sustainable isn’t much of a surprise. Employees and guests have had the environment on the top of the agenda for more than 15 years. The attention to conservation is evident around every turn - in programs that have been in place for over a decade and in new programs that passionate employees have instituted to take Sierra Resort forward into the next generation of environmental conservation.

“Those of us who live and work here take our responsibility to care for the mountain environment very seriously – not because we have to, but because we are all environmentalists at heart,” said General Manager John Rice. “It takes a strong commitment to maintain balance when our forest is used for recreation. By ensuring that sound environmental practices are followed wherever possible in our operations, we deliver on that commitment.”

During the summer of 2007, Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort employees started Project: Green Sierra to bring the resort’s myriad eco-friendly initiatives under one umbrella and create synergies between the many departments. Project: Green Sierra also has outlined multiple ways for guests to get involved at the resort.

“Our guiding philosophy is that we need to be part of the solution when it comes to environmental conservation through direct action at the resort and in our own homes. We encourage our guests to do the same.” said Rice.

The Green Lot

Guests who choose to drive a hybrid vehicle to Sierra Resort will be able to park in Preferred Parking for free. The “Green Lot” will be painted green rather than the traditional yellow and will be located front and center to reward guests taking a tangible step toward reducing their carbon footprint.

Take the Shuttle

Guests can help minimize the number of vehicle trips to Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort by hopping on one of the complimentary shuttles that stop at more than 40 locations in South Lake Tahoe . There is also a shuttle on Saturdays that leaves from Surf & Skate in Fair Oaks . Sierra Resort is upgrading the majority of the fleet to luxury shuttle buses. The Sierra shuttles are good for the environment and they eliminate the hassle of driving and parking, which is great for the guest.

Mini-Green Tags

Guests can choose to offset the carbon emissions associated with their trip to Sierra Resort by purchasing a mini-green tag from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation.

Improve the Forest

Guests can help support conservation projects in the National Forest of the Lake Tahoe Basin by donating to the National Forest Foundation. These projects include trail and forest recreation improvements, wildlife habitat and watershed restoration, and community-based forestry programs. Every dollar donated is matched with 60 cents.

In addition to finding ways to involve Sierra Resort’s guests, Project: Green Sierra has initiated a number of sustainable programs around the resort. These programs include using eco-friendly cleaning products in all guest areas, including Adult & Children’s Ski School , Daycare and in all restaurants, offices and restrooms. Sierra Resort also is working toward reducing overall resort energy consumption by 10 percent through a series of tangible projects such as replacing lightbulbs, installing occupancy sensors and solar lighting where appropriate as well as upgrading inefficient heating systems.

A complete listing of all the environmental initiatives currently in place at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort can be found online at www.SierraAtTahoe.com.
