South Lake Tahoe Mountain Sports Academy

What is the South Lake Tahoe Mountain Sports Academy (SLTMSA)?

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District has partnered with Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort to offer a comprehensive snowsports academy for high school students starting the 2012-13 school year. The South Lake Tahoe Mountain Sports Academy will offer a complete, well-rounded educational experience combined with ski/snowboard race and freeride coaching on the mountain.

The SLTMSA will offer a rigorous and innovative curriculum complemented by a distinctive outdoor program, outstanding college-prep counseling, robust athletic opportunities, a comprehensive digital arts curriculum, and an active community service program. In the fall conditioning section students will work with counselors to develop goals, specific action plans, and chart their progress to improve their physical and mental conditioning through nutrition, diet and sports psychology. Off snow activities will include hiking, rock climbing, ropes courses, mountaineering, paddle boarding, wake boarding and ice skating. On snow activities will be broken into three disciplines (alpine ski racing, freeride skiing, snowboarding), and top level coaches assigned to each will work with the student-athletes to develop their skills. At the end of the winter season, students will review their goals and evaluate progress. The digital media facilities of the school will give students a chance to document their season accomplishments and prepare for college scholarship opportunities.

The South Lake Tahoe Mountain Sports Academy will include a rigorous high school academic curriculum at South Tahoe High School, a challenging athletic training program on the mountain, a private locker and season pass for each student, transportation to and from the mountain, and evaluations of performance both in the classroom and on the mountain. Students registered in South Tahoe High School are eligible for a $7,500 annual tuition fee, and must submit an application for admission. Application submission and fee receipt do not guarantee acceptance into the South Lake Tahoe Mountain Sports Academy.
